I was going to register another account, but it seemed unusually difficult to do. I got that verification code wrong the first time, and now it times out on me. I couldn't even register. emails aren't validating. I've tried several times.

and then you guys get emails when people try to register and you have to approve it too?

it's seems a bit much..

a new one this time

Hi Scotty,

Alright I fixed the registration problem. I also made it tons easier to become a new user.

I made the following changes:

Humanizer Mod is disabled. -- No more are you human questions at registration time.

No VIP code is needed any longer. -- You no longer have to memorize numbers to register.

The MX mail server verify is disabled. -- You can now use any e-mail address to register even fake ones, but you won't get notifications of new topics posted to if you do that.

Instant Registration is activated. -- No more waiting for an e-mail activation link in your e-mail that will never arrive. -- Still don't know why that was but you have access to the board instantly right after signing up. No waiting needed and no admin needed to verify anything.

The only thing I left in was the Random number-letter combo that is a graphic. I do need to keep that there to keep out SOME of the old spam bots. We still may let some through but we can always delete them if they start to spam up the board.

The reason I put in so many safegaurds was we had over 200 spam bots registered, all that stuff made it harder for anyone to register including spam bots. it kept them away for over two years.

I'll send this as a PM also in case you do not get a notification of this post.

Too bad we couldn't use the ip blocking list phpbb3 has. Btw the first spam bot to come on the board in over 2 years has posted in general. Smile

well that was sure quick. you didn't have to do away with all of that. the VIP code seemed a bit much. I was complaining that I wasn't even able to register.

Haha! Well it least it gives us something to do.

So what do you think is a good way to keep bots out without all those guards in place?

As soon as I had all of them in place, it was a bitch even for a human to register but the fact is it did the job. No spam bots in 2 years.

I took out the mx mailer because it seemed buggy, scotty posted that image (thanks) that revealed the bug so I ditched that mod altogether. All that mod did was check to see if it was a real e-mail address. If it was it let you continue registering, if not it was supposed to dump you back out to the login screen.

It didn't do that, instead it prevented even the verification e-mail from being sent out.

The humanizer didn't seem to do very much except keep out a mere 10% of the bots we get. Are you human? What a lame question.

The VIP code was the kicker. With that in place we got NO BOTS AT ALL.

Here is my suggestion, we put the VIP code back in, except we won't use such a long number. I used a special code to represent the gamers mafia.

Here is the code I used:

The numeric in-place letter of each making up the words gamers mafia.

Like the letter G is the number 7 because its the 7th letter of the alphabet and so on..

G A M E R S M A F I A would be..

07 01 13 05 23 24 13 01 06 12 01

then I removed the first digit in each... and that made the final number.

71353431621 which was the code on the "Agreement" page.

Only I knew the meaning of that code. I would be very surprised if someone created a spam bot script that can copy a code from one page and insert it into another.

That's why the VIP code was so effective. If I put back in that VIP code on the Agreement page I'll just make it a smaller number, one that someone can really remember and I'll put it in larger letters to it stands out.

How about the number 7 for G as in the Gamers Mafia.

The trick is it has to be hard-coded, not code-generated for it to be effective.

That will keep the bots out. I'll do that now.

I copied and pasted the vip code several times and never was able to get passed it. I quit trying. Thats probably one of the problems scotty had. I wish there was a mod that could update the ban list with bot domains.

Try it now. Try making a new user for the board. I just did it myself and it worked perfect. But I need you to do it so that you know for yourself that a new user can be registered without any problems.

I put back the VIP code (the one that ultimately got rid of the spam bots) and used just one single number instead of a whole stream of numbers.

Try it now. I just proved it worked for me. But you gotta try it now for yourself.

The spam bots should now disappear. If you find any spam or porn posted in the past 48 hours delete it.

Yes it worked. Might want to make a little text not to make the confirmation response in uppercase. Most sites have their responses in lower. For some reason when I went to register it had cyberknightxan in the username by default.

Captcha Confirmation

I really don't have any control over the captcha code built into phpBB 2.0.22 it's all randomly generated. Sometimes its uppercase and lowercase mixed, sometimes its all lowercase, and sometimes its all uppercase. It just depends on the randomness of the computer generated algorithm it uses.

By the way I know what algorithm it uses -- it takes a new session data and turns the hex code into the equivalent Captcha code and uses that as the combination of letters and number to type in. The session data is based on the binary number generated by the time and date code of the second you press return to log in. That's a long number!

I'm sorry reno, but we are stuck with it for the time being, on how it is now, unless I just dump it. I really don't think we need it if we use the VIP code mod.

Cyber Knight Xan as default username on registration form

Yes, it says cyberknightxan by default only because I was the last one on.

That's a known bug in phpBB 2.0.22 and was never fixed even with phpBB 2.0.23 (and 2.0.23 is the last version they are ever going to support), remember the reason I gave for wanting to switch to version 3 early in the first place? It was because I noticed that bug and thought it may be a security risk. I know better now. It's not a security risk but it is confusing to a new user.

The bug is this...
If you were the last one on, and I tried to sign up a new user then it would read "reno" by default and so forth. If Lion was the last one on and someone new tried to signup with a new account then the default user on the new registration form would be Lion.

I think I can fix this bug but it is kind of tricky. This bug went away with an upgrade to phpBB 3.0 but then, we are back to no HTML support in posting, lack of good skins, and a confusing as hell admin panel to deal with.

I kinda of like the flexibility of 2.0.22 myself.

Doing what I think is the best thing for the GM

If you are leaving it up to me, then I would just dump captcha altogether. The VIP code takes care of the majority of these spam bots anyway. We don't really need an older version of captcha, when we have something that works very very well in place of it, and requires less typing.

What's easier, trying to find some keys on the keyboard or remembering to type in one single digit? I think I made my point.

As far as the fix for the default name on the form, that seems like more of a priority and something I will definately fix in the next few days. I have a busy week ahead of me but I can squeeze in some spare time to do it.

The default name I will go ahead and fix, the captcha I want a reply or two from the staff before it's gone.

If its not necessary then take it out. That bit about the default username is up to you too. I don't mind one way or the other. I just mentioned it because it looked like an error.

I have decided to just leave the default username there for the time being until I have more time on my hands. It's something very involved and I know it will take a lot of my time, that I don't have anymore. If it's a quick fix, like something I can fix up in an hour or 2 then I'll fix it. But if it takes longer then that, then I will have to put it on hold for awhile.

UPDATE ON PROFILE AND REGISTRATION GLITCH

After 9 hours I finally fixed it. I hunted down the line that was causing the problem. I don't know how it got in there but I replaced it with new code that fixed the glitch for both the registration and the viewing of a user profile. I also added a new feature. You can now change your name if you like. Before the changing of a name was not allowed.

I made it so you can change it anytime you like without having to ask an admin.

So some things to try out to confirm that its fixed...

1. Log in and view your profile. Does it say you are you? Or does it still say you are someone else?

2. Try and register as a new user, just go to the register screen where the form is. Does it say Anonymous or some user name in it's place?

3. Try changing your name to something else and then re-logging in with the new name.

Does it work?

Try these 3 things and post the results here. That way I will know it worked.

I tested this with myself, but I need some verification in case it's a cache problem.

I am fairly certain that it's fixed now though.
